IF THE MONEY TREE PRODUCED AN EXTRA $5,000/MONTH
One of our Burmese girls’ preventative sex trafficking projects is lacking funds to such an extent that last week, when I was in Myanmar, we talked about the prospect of shutting this home down because of its challenging financial situation. Similar to you, we believe that a lack of funding should not curtail God’s work. And yet here we are. This particular project, The Tall Poppies Girls’ Home, located in Kyaingtung, Myanmar, prevents innocent girls from being sent to Thailand and China as sex workers. But it is more than that, because we are seeing our girls develop into young Christian women. Our girls come from Animist/Buddhist villages where children can be exploited or tricked for profit. Thai and Chinese brothels regularly recruit girls like ours because of their “fair skin”. Plus, they are compliant and unable to speak Thai or Mandarin – and hence easily controlled. Our house parents in Kyaingtung are the pastors of the church where the girls reside. You see, our 20 girls live upstairs above the church. They regularly help lead the church. This all came about because some kind Kiwis gave us sufficient funds to build a second floor over the original church building. Back in 2016, when we first took the girls in, they were very young, but now one is studying second year nursing, and several are on the cusp of graduating high school and moving to further tertiary education.

If we could shake the money tree a little more, there would be greater scope to develop our ministries, especially in Myanmar, Thailand and Central America. In fact, if The Money Tree could sprout an extra $5,000 per month, we could do a lot more. Firstly, though, here are some things that we would not do with the extra money: we would not rent office space in New Zealand, nor would the NZ ministry upgrade our car, and we would not start flying on the nice airlines, nor fly premium economy! Instead, we would send all of this extra $5,000 entirely overseas. We could expand the work in El Salvador by selecting a further 10 new kids to form another group at our Educational Centre (instead of just our one current group). Or, we have just employed a part-time worker in Thailand, so we could double or even triple the size of the work. Or we could use it to strengthen our Tall Poppies Girls’ work, which is struggling financially.
